On November 5th 1752 at the age of 20, George Washington was initiated as a Freemason. By the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, Washington had already been a Mason for 24 years.[1]

By 1789, (10 years before his death) Masonic Acrostics (poems) were being written glorifying Washington as a Patron Saint of American Freemasonry.[2]

In American Masonic circles, George Washington is referred to as "Wor. Bro. George Washington" which stands for "Worshipful Brother George Washington".[3]

George Washington is known as "America's most famous Freemason".[4]

To deny that Washington was a practicing, lifelong Mason, is to deny the laudatory and sympathetic nature in Washington's private letters to the various masonic lodges at the time.[5]

This life-sized representation was sculpted by France's Jean-Antoine Houdon between 1785 and 1791. It was raised in the capitol rotunda in 1796, the year Washington published his Farewell Address.[7]
